Enhanced DNS

20110221 (2011 February 21 Monday)

Summary

The other day I decided to speed up web page fetching, by enabling a DNS cache on my machine. I also started using google’s faster more secure DNS servers.

Data

Google dns via local, ISPs dns, Local dns.
113ms 141ms 0ms
131ms 381ms 0ms
154ms 389ms 0ms
300ms 418ms 0ms
697ms 709ms 0ms
701ms 1025ms 0ms
757ms 1069ms 0ms
881ms 1501ms 0ms

google.average = 467ms
isp.average = 704ms
local.average = 0ms –if still in cache

How to

  • Install Dnsmasq if not already done.
  • In /etc/dnsmasq.conf Uncomment / edit interface line to read interface=lo
  • In /etc/dnsmasq.conf Uncomment bind-interfaces –to prevent false positive detection of services with nmap
  • type in to bash sudo /etc/init.d/dnsmasq restart
  • Add 127.0.0.1, 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 to list of dns servers, where to do this may vary depending on your OS.
  • restart internet connection
